Over a week after all the other parties signed the peace agreement President Kiir finally signed it today (August 26,2015). He was under tremendous pressure from the international community, the United Nations Security Council and the African Union and the United States to sign the agreement.

Over 20 months ago the civil war began. Tens of thousand people have been killed, over 2,000,000 people were displaced from their homes, many more are with out food, clean water, or sanitation. This new nation has unfortunately taken many steps backward since Independence in 2011. Hopefully this is a the first of many steps forward.

Now the agreement needs to be respected and implemented by all parties. The people of South Sudan deserve a lasting peace.
