Bol Aweng and Jok Dau always knew they would find a way to help those left behind when they fled Piol, their South Sudan village, as frightened 6-year-olds hunted by soldiers and wild animals.

But the two men didn’t know exactly how until they returned to Piol in 2007.

As boys, they had escaped a bloody civil war and trekked more than 1,000 miles on bare feet to Ethiopia, back to Sudan and finally to a squalid refugee camp in Kenya before coming to the United States.
